School Reopening 2020-2021

NHCS is operating under Plan B AA/BB schedule in all grades. Pre-K through grade 5 will transition to Plan A on Monday, March 8, 2021. Grades 6-12 will continue to operate under Plan B AA/BB schedule.
Under Plan A, all elementary students will have the option to choose full-time in-person learning or full-time remote learning. Schools will be contacting parents to verify the attendance option they are choosing for their student.
NHCS families should verify PowerSchool contact information is current to receive Connect 5 phone, email, and text notifications from their schools and the district.

See the NHCS website for more information about school reopening.
A Message From Superintendent Dr. Charles Foust
Dear NHCS Families,
As our community has navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, your goals for your family and the goals of the school district have been the same - to provide a safe learning environment for our children and to create the best conditions to support their academic success. We've also shared the same concerns - protecting the health and safety of our staff and students and overcoming the barriers to learning created by the pandemic and remote learning.
It's with these factors in mind that New Hanover County Schools is transitioning to Plan A for grades pre-K through 5 on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. Middle and high school students will continue to attend under Plan B AA/BB schedule.  Families who would like to remain in or move to remote learning can participate in the 100% remote learning option.
As we bring our youngest learners back to schools five days a week, the district is committed to continuing to practice the 3W's - wait at a socially distanced location, wash hands frequently, and wear masks - with fidelity. We are ready with ample supplies of PPE, health checks, COVID case identification, and rigorous contact tracing. We will do everything possible to keep our staff and students safe, healthy, and successfully engaged in learning.

School Arrival Traffic Patterns
Snipes students arriving via car will come through the carpool loop at the front entrance.  Students will be greeted by staff and be screened before exiting the vehicle.  If they pass the screening, students will be allowed to enter the building.  If not, they will need to return home.  Once they are in the building they will be physically distanced and will be escorted straight to class.  Breakfast will be provided in the classroom for all students.

Snipes students arriving via bus will be screened upon exiting the bus.  in the event of inclement weather, students will be screened in the cafeteria.   If students' pass the screening process, they will line up physically distanced (6 feet apart) and enter the building.  Once they are in the building they will be physically distanced and will be escorted straight to class.  Breakfast will be provided in the classroom for all students.

Each student who is screened (bus and car riders) and passes the temperature check and screening questions will receive a purple wristband to wear into class.  The bands will be collected by teachers and will be disinfected for the next days use.

If a student does not pass the screening process, they will be taken to the nurse’s office and parents/guardians will be notified to come and pick their child up.

School Arrival Health Screening Procedures

Each student will have their temperature taken upon arrival at school.  Students in cars will have their temperature checked while they are still in their vehicle.  Students will also be asked a series of questions to determine whether or not they have been exposed to anyone who may have Covid-19 before being admitted to their classrooms.  If there are any indications that a student may be infected with or exposed to Covid-19, they will be sent home or parent/guardian will be notified immediately and instructed to come and pick their child up.
